Osteopathy

Osteopathy treats the patient, not the disease. Our intention is to restore structural and fluid continuity. The body then begins the healing process and many of the conditions people suffer, can be relieved.

What Is Osteopathy?

“A natural medicine, which aims to restore function in the body by treating the causes of pain and imbalance. To achieve this goal the Osteopathic Manual Practitioner relies on the quality and finesse of his/her palpation and works with the position, mobility and quality of the tissues.”

Andrew Taylor Still is considered the father of osteopathy and osteopathic medicine. He founded osteopathy in 1874 and opened the first school in Kirksville, Missouri in 1892.

Some of the problems that typically respond to osteopathic treatment are listed below:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Head trauma (post concussion, dizzy spells, vertigo, ringing in the ears etc.)
  • Whiplash
  • Any type of swelling, inflammation
  • Digestion problems (bowel, acid reflux)
  • Sciatic pain
  • TMJ (dysfunctions, pain)

Osteopathy shares many of the same goals as traditional medicine, but places greater emphasis on the relationship between the organs and the musculoskeletal system and treating the whole individual rather than just the disease. The goal is to make sure the body is balanced so homeostasis can function to its fullest.

Pain is the chief reason patients seek musculoskeletal treatment. Pain is a symptom, not a disease by itself and if is critically important to determine the cause of the pain.
